Bones Brigade - S/T EP

Photobucket

I only got to see Bones Brigade once in LA with Hit the Deck but I was hooked. Skateboarding, pizza, soda, and video games? Sounds like a Bremerton/Olympia sort of vibe. Lyrics are hilarious and mostly awesome. Fast hardcore with some thrash metal aspects played by some youngsters.

More To Pride - This Is Life

Photobucket

Hardcore circa 2005 on Rival, aka, Rivalry records. I'm not sure why I like this as much as I do, I guess it sort of gives me a contemporary District 9 vibe but just with way less groove. Also it's funny because the dude reads out the lyrics to one of the tracks at the end of the CD version much like the guitar player of District 9 does in the New York Hardcore documentary. Tracks include some guest spots from Mr. 8-clip of Allegiance and Connor of Lights Out, two bands I have a soft spot for considering the time period I got interested in contemporary hardcore. Just look at the shout outs list; it tells all for that time period. I only got to see More to Pride a handful of times but the live sets I did get to see were nuts, I loved it. I was also able to catch their last show at Rivalry fest in 2007. Good stuff if you like the pseudo-thug contemporary hardcore feel.

Free Spirit - Demo 2008

Photobucket

I guess after talking it up I should put the Free Spirit Demo on here too. I am way more fond of this release, I wish I had a physical copy. 5 awesome songs in 2 minutes.

1. Free Spirit Intro
With an open mind to step outta line. We’ll take a stand all the time. Take a chance to do what’s right. Standing Strong we wont lose sight.
2. Express Yourself
Raise your voice if you got something to say. Take a stand to make a better today. Speak your mind your own way. An open mind with something to say. Speak out don’t hide what you have inside
3. Stand As One
Stick together me and you, stand for something true. Stick together me and you, we share a bond that’s true. Stand united, fight-stand as one. In a scene divided we can’t hold on. Stand as one.
4. Unite
Unite to do what’s right!
5. Be Yourself
Open up your eyes and look inside, and find a person with an open mind. Who doesn’t give a fuck about what they say, just acting like yourself and being your own way. Show the world what’s inside, be yourself and have some pride. Who cares what others fucking do? Why don’t you just let you be you? Do It! Be Yourself. Show the world what’s inside, be yourself and have some pride Who cares what others fucking do? Why don’t you just let you be you!

Free Spirit - Free Yourself

Photobucket

Here's another one I've been waiting for, for quite some time. I'll be honest I was a little disappointed. The vocals have slightly excessive reverb and I'm not particularly sold on the recording quality. It's probably just that I'm really, really attached to the demo recordings. Also, the lyrics don't really branch too far from where the demo left off. A lot is written about the message behind the words and hardcore but I'm not seeing too much beyond the "be yourself" slogan. Oh well, I'm a serious sucker for the genre and all in all I love it. Maybe it needs a few more spins before I can rank it up there with the demo. Don't let my opinion dissuade you.

Dehumanized - Demo Tape

Photobucket

Yes! James gave me a copy of the Dehumanized demo tape before we went skating yesterday. I've been waiting quite a while for this band to have a physical copy of their music and the wait was fucking worth it! The tape blazes through 6 tracks ranging from hardcore anthems to black metal influenced jammers to everything in between. Long story short, this music is incredibly unique to Olympia hardcore and I feel hardcore in general. Politically charged lyrics; vocals are nuts. Awesome awesome awesome! James requested that the songs do not become available online so sorry folks you'll just have to see them to get one. Either that or if you're really interested you can contact me and I can probably get one from him to send to you. The ethos of the band are all about not taking the musical experience of hardcore for granted as a commodified product so it follows logically that he would not want it spread over the internet. I just want to promote that this bad boy is out there. It hasn't left my tape deck since I put it in... it probably won't for a while. Also I should mention that the B-side is a Burzum influenced keyboard track James made. What will the boy think up next?
Dehumanized is:
James: the Crazies, Bring tha Noize!, Insubordinate, the Answer, Stop At Nothing, Outlook
Adriana: Trainyard, Outlook, Hysterics
Ian: White Wards, Scary Man, In Debt, (unofficial) Red & Black
Kim: Hysterics

A unique feature about these tapes is that James got them all from goodwill, cut the tape to time, and recorded them all himself. The lyric sheet is wrapped in the excess tape that you see in the picture. Quite the endeavor.

White Wards - Painkiller Tape

Photobucket

White Wards Painkiller Tape, super cool translucent insert thing. The only difference between this and the 2009 demo is a lack of a few tracks and a Government Issue cover. Enjoy. White Wards 7" will be coming soon on Iron Lung records. Holy Cow. Also, added to the White Wards roster is yours truly on drums.

Scary Man - Painkiller Tape

Photobucket

Joey and Ian took the time and effort to make exclusive tapes of the Scary Man and White Wards Demos for Painkiller records. The tracks are the same as the demo just new artwork, also hand painted. Pretty silly stuff, Ian looks like a goddamn model on the cover. Hell yes. New Scary Man tracks are in the works and a 7" (limited to 50 due to financial constraints) will be coming your way soon.

Scary Man and Red & Black at the Crossroads

Red & Black rocking it up. Steven breaks my cymbal stand and turns my cymbal inside out at the end, fun fun fun.

Scary Man with X-ed up Mickey Mits and cowboy hats.
