Waste Management - Get Your Mind Right EP

Jesus this 7" is so good. It was recommended by RJ of Sex Vid as a 'straight up SS Decontrol rip-off'. I bought a copy from Phantom City and have listened to it relentlessly. It has definitely become one of my favorite contemporary hardcore records. As far as an SS Decontrol worship band goes it is most apparent vocally. The music is also comparable to Negative FX in its speed and quick snare-roll stops. It definitely has more of a 'modern' sound than SS Decontrol but exhibits some of Al Barile's song writing in tracks like "WBD". I love the recording quality on the record. I guess I just really like this record in general. The Agnostic Front cover at the end of Get Your Mind Right is a nice touch.

Scapegoat - S/T 7"

In 2007 I left a show in Kirkland to go see one in Seattle at the now defunct 'Fried Chicken Barge'. I went initially to see Mind Eraser and Sex Vid and was blown away by Scapegoat. I bought a seven inch and have listened to it constantly since. If you're a fan of Crossed Out you can't really lose with Scapegoat. I also remember a hilarious performance at sound and fury 2008. They were on tour with Mind Eraser so they got put on the bill and Mark, the vocalist, trashed talked the fest. He didn't nail it quite as hard as Stephen of the First Step but his patronizing tone was quite obvious. On Sixes tour we stayed at Mark's place in Boston and I professed my love for his band. The 7" folds out into a huge crass-records-style poster that I was unable to scan. Here's some of the artwork/lyrics.

No Tolerance - Demo Tape

Tanar tipped me off to this one and boy am I glad I got it before it became sought after. The tape was a mystery grab on his part and a great one at that. Recorded in 2007, the tape originally did not credit anyone on the recording. It was later discovered that Justin DeTore of Mental and Mind Eraser fame was the brainchild. I listened to this tape back to back more times than I can count when I got it. I loved it! It also marked a time in Olympia where everyone, and I mean almost everyone, was proceeding backward and getting into punk bands they missed out on while simultaneously selling out and not giving a shit about anything (due to rock star ethos contained in these punk sensations). The absolutely blatant straight edge lyrics on this tape provided an ease on the mind knowing that somewhere in the world, namely Boston, someone was as pissed off as I was about the subject. These recordings later made it to a seven inch that my friend Ian, of White Wards/Scary Man fame, was nice enough to pick up for me at Sound and Fury. I almost went just to see No Tolerance play. My friend Sam was playing so I called him to see if he'd pick up anything they had for me there. I later found out there were people from Olympia going so I asked and received. Much love.

Ecoli - God Hates You

This is the tour 7" for Ecoli's release "God Hates Us All". They played Olympia a few years back, 2006?, and I bought their demo tape and 7" (I assumed they were different). I ended up trading the tape to an Ecoli collector for Judge and Hard Stance records. I'm glad I hung onto the 7" because I didn't realize how awesome it was until a few listens. General comments: the lyrics are super wild, goofy and grotesque at times, the drummer is a madman (if they still have the same guy) and I think they covered Motorhead... or was that Second Opinion? Anyhow, these recordings, especially the first track, kind of remind me of the Koro EP. They're incredibly fast, even on 33rpms it sounds like it could be a normal hardcore record. If that doesn't sell you I don't know what will.

Coke Bust - Demo 7"

This 7" is awesome. Blisteringly fast hardcore with 'to-the-point' lyrics. Red & Black had the pleasure of playing our first show with Coke Bust. Although it was long after the release of this 7" they still were just as great. There was also a Faith cover that didn't make it to the 7" from the demo (I guess it was intended to instead of YOT) so I'll include that in the download. Happy listening...

Backtrack - Demo 2008

Backtrack is a contemporary hardcore band from New York. Sixes played with them last year in... uh, I can't remember, maybe it was LA? Anyhow, I enjoyed the performance and the vibe. Forceful vocal delivery and straight ahead garb caught my attention. Judging by the name I am assuming the band was going for a raw deal, rest in pieces, breakdown kind of thing but ended up embodying more-so early 2000s hardcore in the vein of No Warning and so on. I gave one of the dudes a Trainyard demo (for we also take from similar influences but present it a different way). He was kind of a dickhead during the interaction so I'm hoping it had to do more with being tired, etc. than him just being a jerk. In contemporary hardcore it seems the latter prevails if you aren't kissing ass. If you have a hankering for a moshy-jammer check out "Kept Out".
